Ryan Schroeder

PhD, MACP Canadian Certified Counsellor

My Story

Welcome!

I’m Ryan, a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) here at The Calgary Therapy Institute.

I hold a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (Yorkville University). As a therapist, I have two main areas of focus:

Religious Trauma/Spiritual Abuse

~ childhood indoctrination

~ faith deconstruction

~ abuse by clergy and other religious authorities

~ (re)claiming personal values and life purpose

~ etc.

Neurodiversity

~ especially autism and ADHD

~ care-giving for neurodivergent kids

~ navigating societal ableism and social expectations

~ building self-understanding and self-acceptance

~ etc.

I use a variety of therapeutic modalities, but my favourites are:

Person-centred Therapy (this means a lot of careful listening and prompts to deepen your self-understanding)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (this approach uses mindfulness to align your behaviour with your personal values, even in the face of challenging circumstances)

Lifespan Integration (this body-based trauma treatment re-integrates painful or threatening memories to restore a sense of safety and vitality)

A little about me:

~ My escape path from fundamentalist religion took me through a PhD in Religious Studies at the University of British Columbia (in the Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies).

~ I received an ADHD diagnosis as an adult, and I’m a parent of two neurodivergent kids.

~ I’m an incorrigible creative. I play stringed instruments any chance I get, and I love drawing and poetry. (If you come to me for therapy, we will delight in the words you use :)
